A character with multiple facets<\/strong>\u00a0The architect, the devout Catholic, the master of Catalan modernism...<\/p>\n

But his life wasn't easy, and ended rather tragically.<\/em><\/strong>in a certain kind of solitude devoted to art...<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Gaudi... his real name...<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Antoni Gaud\u00ed i Cornet<\/strong> was born on June 25, 1852 in Reus or Riudoms.<\/p>\n

An international reputation!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gaudi is admired by all Catalans and the ever-increasing number of visitors to beautiful Barcelona.<\/p>\n

And Gaudi created scattered works<\/strong> all over the city.<\/p>\n

Today, almost all of these achievements are listed on the world heritage site.<\/strong> We salute the fact that his work is varied: from the early Palacio G\u00fcell, with its distinctly Gothic inspirations, to the English park on Park G\u00fcell<\/a> to the incredible Sagrada Familia<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Take a stroll along Passeig de Gracia to discover houses such as the Casa Mil\u00e0<\/a> or the Casa Batll\u00f3<\/a> is a real pleasure.<\/p>\n

And with Gaudi, we discover even more incredible places like Casa Vicens, that superb mansion in the heart of Gracia that used to be a vacation home, or Colonia G\u00fcell, slightly outside the city.<\/p>\n

An opportunity to a little getaway!<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the time, Gaudi was not only well known in Barcelona, but also internationally, as he took part in a skyscraper project in New York<\/strong> and an exhibition at Grand Palais de Paris<\/strong> for which he received rave reviews!<\/p>\n

But it didn't start out that way...<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"We've awarded the diploma to a madman or a genius. Time will tell\".<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

So says the director of his architecture school when Gaudi graduates in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

And yes! Even at the time, Gaudi was a troublemaker and a question mark.<\/p>\n

Gaudi transformed everything and revolutionized art.<\/p>\n

What's so special about Gaudi?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The end of the 19th century was marked by a real artistic breakthrough in Europe. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Commonly known as Art Nouveau<\/strong> in French, this willingness to break away is also called \"Secession<\/strong> in Austria or \"Jugendstil<\/em><\/strong> in Germany.<\/p>\n

Artists wanted to break away from artistic trends such as Gothic art and move closer to the forms of nature. While curved.<\/strong> The disappearance of straight lines.<\/strong> Flowers and plants<\/strong> invade architecture and all objects.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Because Art Nouveau is a total art, where all the furniture is Art Nouveau, as are the jewels, the paintings...<\/p>\n

A style that would also develop in Catalonia under the name of modernism or \"modernismo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And the roots of Catalanism permeate the style, as the precursors and important artists of this movement wanted a particular, typically Catalan style... An original style!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Modernism is everywhere in the city.<\/p>\n

Artists like Gaudi, Puig i Catafalchs, Domenec i Montaner<\/strong><\/em> create sensational architecture...<\/p>\n

And Gaudi is a particular kind of modernism, a modernism found nowhere else... unique!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Highly colorful<\/strong> with risk-taking<\/strong>... Building systems you wouldn't believe possible...<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A myth, a Sagrada that may never end...<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Gaudi was inspired by nature: Montserrat mountains, Catalan caves, Majorcan landscapes...<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A life devoted to art and religion<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Gaudi is a practicing Catholic<\/strong> and entirely dedicated to religion and its art.<\/p>\n

He spent his childhood in a design and architecture school<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

His life is marked by misfortunes<\/strong> like the death of his mother when he was very young.<\/p>\n

During his lifetime, Gaudi did not create a family, and 1914 was a dark year in which he lost many of his friends.<\/p>\n

From then on, he decided to devote himself entirely to his major work: the Sagrada Familia, begun in 1900.<\/p>\n

And today, as you know, it is still under construction.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everyone has their own bet to make in Barcelona or gives information heard by others: \"the Sagrada would be ready in 2025... or 2035...\"<\/em> And this contributes to the myth...<\/p>\n

An incredible place whose completion is still uncertain.<\/p>\n

To complete his work, he then lived ascetic<\/strong> and worshipper of God.<\/p>\n

La Sagrada is one of the most visited monuments in Spain.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gaudi's beatification by the Catholic Church is currently underway.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

His friend and patron Eusebi G\u00fcell<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When we visit Gaudi's works, one name comes up very often: Eusebi G\u00fcell.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In those days, houses and works of art were named after the person who had commissioned them.<\/p>\n

And Eusebi G\u00fcell was a friend of Gaudi's and above all his patron. He commissioned many works from him: the G\u00fcell Cellars, the Gu\u00ebll Pavilions, G\u00fcell Palace, G\u00fcell Park and the Colonia G\u00fcell crypt.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Gaudi killed by a streetcar<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Over the years, Gaudi put aside his appearance to live in a rather rigid asceticism.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

His preoccupations revolved mainly around the Sagrada, and his physical appearance became very neglected.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, in 1926, he was run over by a streetcar on the Gran Via de les Corts Catalans. He was taken to the Santa Creu hospital.<\/p>\n

No one recognizes him<\/strong> and it's only a few days later that a chaplain realizes it's the incredible architect.<\/p>\n

It's already too late...<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

His art was recognized during his lifetime and long after his death.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We often hear that artists are recognized after their death<\/strong><\/em>. This is not really the case with Gaudi, who enjoyed considerable patronage and recognition during his lifetime...<\/p>\n

But as with the whole Art Nouveau movement, there were the dark years<\/strong> where public opinion criticized its curvaceous forms and dreamlike appearance.<\/p>\n

After that, it's Noucentrism<\/strong>This was a return to classicism, taking over from Modernismo. It wasn't until the 1950s and the figure of Dali<\/strong> to bring Gaudi back into the limelight...<\/p>\n
