This is a dance that alternates <strong>short and long steps<\/strong> and dance in a circle.<\/p>\n<p>If you've ever visited Barcelona, you'll no doubt have spotted them in certain parts of the old town, where young and old alike gather to practice this ancient art.<strong> an essential part of Catalan culture.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anyone can dance it! In fact, that's why it was so popular back then. <strong>it made no distinction between social classes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even if it's better to know the basics, because one false step will upset the whole circle.<\/p>\n<p><em>Its melody, easily recognizable with its various wind instruments<\/em> you'll want to get in on the act too!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The origins of the Sardana dance...<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The sardana is a very old dance, as it is said to date back <strong>in the 15th century BC and related to the goddess Ceres<\/strong>. This dance was performed by <strong>Cretans, Etruscans, Hellenes, Greeks.<\/strong> In the 1st century AD, dance was seen as an offering to the Moon, and it would be <strong><em>the Iberians were the first to practice it in what are now the Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourbarcelone.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2009_Barcelona_Sardana_Volkstanz.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1642\" src=\"https:\/\/bonjourbarcelone.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2009_Barcelona_Sardana_Volkstanz-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bonjourbarcelone.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2009_Barcelona_Sardana_Volkstanz-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bonjourbarcelone.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2009_Barcelona_Sardana_Volkstanz.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After that, it's <strong>\"contrap\u00e0s<\/strong> which resembles the sardana, was first recorded in the 19th century, and later, the sardana would come to enliven village festivals in North and South Catalonia.<\/p>\n<p>A musician from Figueres is very famous as the instigator of today's Sardana. His name is <strong>Pep Ventura.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Merc\u00e8 festivities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If there's one celebration not to be missed in Barcelona, it's the Merc\u00e8 festivities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Five days to celebrate Barcelona's patron saint!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The official day is September 24, but it's 5 consecutive days packed with folk dances, citywide activities, human towers, fireworks... you name it! Every year, the festival gets even more impressive and beautiful! Known in Catalan as the<em> festa major d'estiu, the whole of Barcelona celebrates the Mare de D\u00e9u de la Merc\u00e8<\/em>\u00a0(Notre-Dame-de-Gr\u00e2ce).<\/p>\n<p>The Virgen de la Merc\u00e8 is venerated by Catholics and is also known as the Virgin of Mercy. The 1<sup>er<\/sup> August 1218, the Virgin Mary appeared to three well-known Barcelona citizens of the time. Notably San Pedro Nolasco, founder of the Order of Merc\u00e8.<\/p>\n<p>Commonly known as the summer holidays, <strong>the Merc\u00e8 festivities signal the end of summer and the gradual arrival of autumn<\/strong>. The heat will gradually diminish.<\/p>\n<p>It's more than <strong>500 activities<\/strong> all over the city!<\/p>\n<p>And for all audiences:<em> children, adults, lovers of Catalan traditions,... <\/em><\/p>\n<p>And in general, <em>these activities are free! <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Catalan popular culture is the queen of the Merc\u00e8 festivities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dressed in traditional costumes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Although you might see sardana dances where everyone is dressed normally, there are traditional costumes, different for men and women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men wear the barretina and faixa. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The women wear headdresses.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dance steps: alternating short and long steps<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The dancers stand in a circle, alternating long and short steps.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful, because it's the group's responsibility to respect the steps, as the strength of the entire dance depends on it.<\/p>\n<p>The dancers dance <strong><em>round<\/em> <\/strong>and <strong><em>hold hands<\/em><\/strong>. They follow<em><strong> the rhythm of the Cobla<\/strong><\/em>the orchestra composed of <em>eleven to thirteen musicians, with typical Catalan wind instruments and instruments such as oboes, flutes, trumpets and trombones.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Catalan culture under Francoism<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Catalan folklore and the Catalan language were banned under Franco's Spain.<\/strong> (1936\/9 \u00e0 1977).<\/p>\n<p>Catalanism is one of the fundamental debates in Spain today, as a significant percentage of the population wishes to establish Catalan independence and thus separate from Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Folklore, and in particular the sardana dance, forms an important part of the <strong>Catalan identity repressed<\/strong> during decades of dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Sardana in the songs of Charles Trenet<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Sardana is very well known and has even been immortalized in Trenet's song \"La Sardane\":<\/p>\n<p><em>How pretty is the Sardana<\/em><em><br \/>\nLet us dance hand in hand<br \/>\nIn the land of green plane trees<br \/>\nFrom the land of the tramontanes.<br \/>\nYoung girls young people like it<br \/>\nAnd even the old ones from their canes<br \/>\nHammer it on the stones of the path<br \/>\nTonight how many love affairs<br \/>\nWill blossom in the hearts of twenty-year-olds<br \/>\nThey know the Sardana<br \/>\nThey danced it when they were kids<br \/>\nHow many will lose their minds<br \/>\nPour toi Sardane du pays catalan.<br \/>\nFriends, it's party time in Collioure.<br \/>\nThe old port is decked out<br \/>\nAnd in front of the surrounding sea<br \/>\nHere's the eternal golden steeple<br \/>\nOn the pebbles, green and pink<br \/>\nBoats in tender colors<br \/>\nThe metamorphosis begins<br \/>\nTheir veils turned to flowers<br \/>\nAnd under the wandering moon<br \/>\nThe Sardana forms its round.<br \/>\nHow pretty is the Sardana<br \/>\nLet us dance hand in hand<br \/>\nFrom the land of the tramontanes<br \/>\nIt flies to neighboring countries<br \/>\nTonight how many love affairs<br \/>\nWill blossom in the hearts of twenty-year-olds<br \/>\nHow many will lose their minds<br \/>\nPour toi, Sardane du pays catalan<br \/>\nFor you, Sardane of the Catalan country.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Catalonia: a French and Spanish territory<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>And yes, Catalonia is now divided into two parts.<\/p>\n<p>The territories located in the French zone, which designates the department of <strong>Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales<\/strong> or commonly known as the <strong>North Catalonia<\/strong> and the territories located in the Spanish zone, South Catalonia.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sardana is practiced throughout Catalonia, from north to south.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Where to see sardana dance performances?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the center of Barcelona, on the Cathedral square, <strong>Sante-Croix Cathedral<\/strong>you have two options.<\/p>\n<p>You can visit us on Saturday at 7pm or on Sunday around 12pm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sant Jaume Square<\/strong> also hosts Sardanes on Sunday afternoons.<\/p>\n<p>It's an opportunity to discover tradition without leaving the city center.<\/p>\n<p>Barcelona is also a festive city. It's a pyrotechnic festival where participants, known as \"Devils\" and \"Dragons\", run around with large flaming sticks.<\/p>\n<p>When they light up, they form marvellous lights that shoot out in thousands of tiny sparks.<\/p>\n<p>Just like the human towers, called castellers in Catalan, which take place in the middle of the day! Participants form towers by building floors with their own bodies. And it's the lightest person, usually a child or \"\u00a0<strong>l'enxaneta \"<\/strong>who climbs to the top of the tower.
