The stadium was originally built <strong>for the 1929 International Exhibition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Efforts were concentrated on preparing the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourbarcelone.fr\/en\/montjuic\/\">Montju\u00efc<\/a>which was the backdrop chosen for the big event. In addition, the Olympic Stadium, the magic fountain of Montju\u00efc, the National Palace (which today houses the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourbarcelone.fr\/en\/national-art-museum-of-catalonia\/\">Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya<\/a>), the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourbarcelone.fr\/en\/poble-espanyol\/\">Poble Espanyol<\/a> and Greek theater all exist thanks to urban development and <strong>the architectural momentum of the period.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc127182355\"><\/a><strong>A Catalan designer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Pere Dom\u00e8nech i Roura (son of the famous Modernist architect Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech I Montaner) was responsible for designing the stadium, which at the time was considered the second largest in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Although Barcelona bid for the 1936 Olympic Games, the political situation in Spain prevented the city from hosting the world's most important sporting event, at least on this occasion, because 56 years later, its time would finally come.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc127182356\"><\/a><strong>Barcelona's Olympic stadium gets a second wind<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The setback of the 1936 Olympic Games plunged the stadium into a state of neglect, from which it only emerged with the announcement that in 1992, the city would finally host the coveted games.
