Standing proudly on Catalonia's northern coast, the historic town of Tossa de Mar is a treasure.

The town offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and is famous for its sandy beaches, lighthouse and, of course, its historic medieval walled village.

What to do in Tossa de Mar: take a hike along the Camí de Ronda

Walking north from Tossa de Mar, follow the red and white signs that guide you along this path. In this direction, the path presents some steep hills. However, the fragrance of pine, rosemary and thyme will make you forget the difficulty of walking.

After 3 km, Cala Bona comes into view. If you like snorkeling, you'll love exploring this cove's seabed and swimming with all kinds of Mediterranean fish.

It's a good place to take a break and have something to eat before continuing our search for new coves.

Discover Cala Pola

The next treasure is not far from Cala Bona. It's only after a 1 km walk that Cala Pola comes into view. Here you'll find yourself in a sandy cove with crystal-clear waters, larger than Cala Bona. It's usually very crowded, especially in summerbecause there's a campsite nearby.

It's a great place to lie on the sand, soak up the sun and play a game of volleyball.

Head for the southern part of Camí de Ronda

Leaving Tossa de Mar again, head south instead of north. Walk for 3.5 km until you reach the Llorell beaches, two beaches configured as one long beach. This natural area is just waiting to be explored, and the area is a magnet for water sports enthusiasts.

Here you can enjoy a wide variety of sports such as :

• Visit scuba diving
• the kayak
• water skiing
• windsurfing

There are two other coves on the way to the Llorell beaches. On the way back, 3 km before arriving in Tossa de Mar, I recommend a stop at the Cala Figuera cove. The abundant vegetation surrounding this spot makes it very special. What's more, it's not usually as crowded as the other coves in the area. However, naturism is practiced here.

If you want to start your day in style, wake up early and watch the sunrise over the sea.

If it's not common to get up early on these vacations, I'd advise you to make an exception if you're in Tossa de Mar. I can assure you that you won't regret it. It's a show not to be missed!

Strolling through the streets of the old town

If you're in Tossa de Mar, don't forget to visit the old town. This majestic medieval part of town is steeped in history and is the only example of a fortified medieval town still standing on the Catalan coast. With its narrow cobbled streets and seven towers, time seems to have stood still in the old town.

What's more, I recommend walking to the lighthouse at the highest point of the town. In the XIIᵉ century, Tossa de Mar was a fortified medieval town with a castle overlooking the town. Years later, this castle became a windmill, then replaced by a lighthouse. The lighthouse is still operational and the site has been declared a national historic monument.

Don't forget to stop for tapas

There are many restaurants where you can eat tapas in Tossa de Mar. When you eat tapas, I advise you to comment on different varieties that you can share with friends or family. For example, you can try many specialities on the menu.

Among these, I recommend you try :

• the Gaspatxo cold tomato soup
• visit Patatas bravas French fries served with a spicy sauce
• visit Pebrots del piquillo Peppers stuffed with brandade
