What to do in Calella: article summary
What to do in Calella: discover the town's beaches
Of course, the main reason to come to Calella is probably its three beautiful beaches. You won't be disappointed. The three kilometers of sand along the town's waterfront offer a range of activities from windsurfing to sea kayaking.
During the summer months, all the town's activity seems to shift to the seafront, so the beaches are always lively, albeit with 50,000 m² of sand, rarely overcrowded.
If you have teenagers, they'll be delighted to discover the sports complex and water sports club. These facilities offer sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking. kayak and pedal boats, as well as soccer, volleyball and even aerobics on the sand.
Enjoy beach activities and time for refreshments
The children's favorite stretch of sand is Platja Gran Calella, thanks to the two rafts anchored 100 m from the shore with their own slides. This is the town's main beach. It runs 1,430 meters long and 60 meters wide along the coast. In summer, it's a sea of parasols, with over 1,000 available for rental.
In addition to several temporary snack bars that set up shop during the summer months, there's a restaurant and a beach club for relaxing, as well as a shady park.
Another great beach is Garbi. Separated from the town by a railroad line and accessible only via the many underpasses, Garbi is often quieter than Gran Calella and is served by its own selection of temporary bars, so that bathers can purchase snacks and refreshments without having to return to the city.
What to do in Calella: what to do after your swim
The first thing to do when you arrive in Calella is to consult your local tourist office to see if there are any parties during your stay. Spaniards really know how to party, and these parties tend to bring whole communities together with dancing and music on every corner. It's something you'll never forget.
If you love shopping, why not explore Carrer de l'Essglesia, the city's main shopping street. You'll also find a museum that traces the town's history from pre-Roman times to the present day. There's also a shopping mall with over 400 boutiques, which should satisfy even the most dedicated shopaholic.
Finally, you'll discover Torretes de Calella, a XIXᵉ century tower now in ruins used for signage. This was once a defense tower used to repel pirate invasions.
What else can you do in a day in Calella?
If you only want to spend a day there, why not take the family to the coast to enjoy the city's Barcelona-inspired architecture?
You can also make the short trip to Lloret de Mar to spend the day in the vast Water World park or travel to the PortAventura, a huge theme park with six different "worlds" to explore.

One of my favorite local hotels is the Bon Repòs. A good hotel with a great family atmosphere, the Bon Repòs is just a five-minute walk from the beach. You can take advantage of the various facilities, such as the two swimming pools and, of course, free WiFi throughout the hotel.
If you want something more luxurious, you'll spend your vacation at the Medplaya Hotel Santa Monica. The Medplaya Hotel Santa Monica is an excellent choice for families.
