Monvinic was founded in 2008 by Sergi Ferrer-Salat, a businessman who had enjoyed great success in the pharmaceutical industry, and who wanted to create a wine culture center in Barcelona.
As co-owner of the Ferrer Bobet winery in Priorat, he clearly has a passion for good wine. This is evident in the Monvinic. The result is incredibly elegant, if a little cold on first experience. However, the wine is the center of attention here and everything is built around it.
At a time when everyone is rushing to make wine seem simple and user-friendly, there's something quite refreshing about this old-fashioned approach, where the The intellectual pursuit of wine is in no way minimized.
A huge wine list
The main reason to go to Monvinic is to enjoy their wine selection. The first time you go there, you'll probably get dizzy. In addition to the 50 wines on rotation by the glass, there are also several thousand wines available by the bottle. It's a a veritable Ali Baba's cave for all wine lovers.
What's more, it's also a great way to practice your wine tasting skills. In fact, you can request a blind tasting and try to recognize the country or grape variety from which the wine comes.
On average, charge €30-35 per evening to enjoy a wide selection from the wine list. You can choose a full or half glass when you order your drink. So you can try different wines on the same budget.
Le Monvinic: a designer interior
Enter through a sliding glass door in Carrer Diputacio and you'll come upon a small reception area, where you can either wait to be seated in the dining room, or install it yourself.
Just beyond reception, there's a row of dark coffee tables, leaning against a wall and surrounded by comfortable chairs. This area of Monvinic is designed for those wishing to dine and enjoy casual drinks.
The bar menu differs slightly from that of the restaurant, and this is where Menu del dia at €20 is servedas well as a good selection of tapas.
The dining area is at the rear of Monvinic and includes a large, well-lit dining room, an outdoor terrace at the rear and a chef's table in the kitchen itself. The à la carte menu is mainly served here and promises a delicious, if somewhat expensive, evening.
A quality meal
In 2016, Monvinic hired a new chef, Ariadna Julian, who has transformed the kitchen considerably. With an emphasis on slow cooking and seasonal ingredients, you get what you pay for. On site, I recommend you try their Fish and Chips. This is perhaps one of the best specialties of the place.
If you have a little more finesse, you can also find two tasting menus at €55 and €75. For this price, wine is not included.
What are Monvinic's opening hours?
To take advantage of this magnificent wine list, you can visit :
- 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday to Friday (no wine served before 1 p.m.)
- From 7 p.m. to midnight Saturdays and Mondays (reservations from 8 p.m.)
The establishment closes on Sundays.
