The key to aa successful day in BarcelonaIn my opinion, the best way to get a feel for the city is to visit two or three of its most important monuments.
Today, I'm taking you on a day trip to the Catalan capital.
A day in Barcelona: article summary
Start your journey at Plaça de Catalunya
Our journey naturally begins at the place de Catalunya. It's surrounded by magnificent buildings and has access to all the main places you'll want to visit in the city. What's more, thanks to its central location, you'll be able to reach the most important monuments very quickly.
From here you can reach the Passeig de Gracia. It's probably one of the most beautiful streets in the world. From 7 Rue, you can reach three famous Barcelona houses designed by different architects. From here, you can access :
- La Casa Lleo i Morera by Luis Domenech i Montaner,
- Visit Casa Amatller de Puig y Cadalfach
- Visit Casa Batllo by Antoni Gaudi.
Visit Casa Mila
The embarrassment of architectural riches continues across the street with the Casa Mila by Gaudi, a vast monolithic dwelling with generous curves. If these buildings are magnificent from the outside, they're also worth a visit.
However, for a one-day stay, if you want to see as much as possibleI advise you to skip this one and go straight to the Sagrada Familia. Here you can appreciate the work of Gaudi.
La Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's last work
Gaudi was a devout Catholic, and devoted the last years of his life to this grandiose edifice, every corner of which is decorated with religious allegories, natural motifs and mathematical equations.
You can't miss this visit. However, to avoid queuing while waiting for your return, I advise you to book your ticket before you get there. That way, you can go straight to the interior of the building without losing any time in your visit.
Continue your visit to Parc Güell
Visit parc Güell is a place you won't want to miss. Here, once again, you'll be able to appreciate Gaudi's various works. In addition to strolling through the park's lush green alleys, you'll be able to visit one of Gaudi's homes, now a museum.
Lunch in Gracia
After your visit to Parc Güell, stop off in the bohemian chic district of Gracia. It was once a separate village from Barcelona, and indeed, the (fiercely Catalan) inhabitants still consider themselves distinct from the city center.
The area is packed with tapas bars and affordable restaurants, so you'll have no trouble making your choice.
A day in Barcelona: Las Ramblas
How can you visit Barcelona without visiting Las Ramblas, the city's famous thoroughfare? Even if it's full of tourists, it's a must-see on your visit to the city. It's a wide, lively street lined with theaters, restaurants and palaces.
On the way up Las RamblasYou'll soon come across the bustling Plaça Reial, perhaps my favorite square in the city.
You'll also pass the La Boqueria and also in front of the Liceu theater.
Enjoy an evening of flamenco
After your visit, you can round off your day in Barcelona with a flamenco show and dinner. There are several excellent tablaos (concert halls) to choose from. To find out more about flamenco in Barcelona, please visit read the article I wrote on the subject.
Time for dinner
If flamenco isn't your cup of tea, you can visit one of the many restaurants offering typical Catalan specialties. For example, you can try the famous tapas or grab a bite to eat traditional paella.
There's a huge choice of restaurants in Barcelona. If you want to find the best restaurant in the city, I recommend read the article I wrote on this subject.
Dance the night away
Barcelona's life is mainly nocturnal. Indeed, many bars, restaurants and nightclubs stay open most of the night. So, after dinner, if you want to have some fun.., I suggest you visit one of our many nightclubs in Barcelona. Whether you choose the electric atmosphere of the Razzmatazz or a more relaxed evening at Opium, there's bound to be a a nightclub made for you in Barcelona!
Visiting Barcelona in a day may seem like a tall order. However, you can enjoy the many typical places and taste the local specialities during your visit.
