Starred restaurants in Barcelona: article summary
What is a Michelin star?
Michelin stars are awarded to restaurants that the Michelin company deems outstanding and worthy after an anonymous, secret inspection. The award-winning restaurant usually wins recognition and praise, enhancing the chef's reputation.
In the early 1900s, Michelin tried to promote the concept of automobiles as a way of selling more tires. one way to achieve this was to encourage people to drive more.
So Michelin created the Michelin Guide. They freely distributed the first copies of the handbook to motorists. These books included maps with useful locations such as hotels and restaurants, as well as instructions on mechanics and tire replacement.
The arrival of the first inspectors
Shortly afterwards, the company hired inspectors to secretly examine and rank restaurants. The star system has existed since 1936.
- 1 star A very good restaurant with quality cuisine, well worth a visit.
- 2 stars An excellent address, well worth a visit.
- 3 stars A unique cuisine, worthy of a special trip.
While the guide focused on France, they gradually added the main Spanish cities, such as than San Sebastian, Madrid and Barcelona in the Michelin guide.

Aürt is a small gourmet restaurant with an open kitchen at Hilton Diagonal hotel. They were awarded a Michelin star in November 2019, 8 months after opening the restaurant to the public.

In fact, the restaurant is located in the hotel lobby. You enter almost immediately upon entering the hotel, which is another explanation for the restaurant's name. There's no time to think: one step and you're already in the world of the gourmet cuisine!
